We'll meet again
The song "We'll meet again was written in 1939 by Ross Parker and Hugh Charles and it was made famous in 1942, by the British singer Vera Lynn.
The song is one of the most famous songs of the second world war as it was associated with soldiers leaving their loved ones for going to the battlefield. The words "We'll meet again" were quite optimistic at that time as many soldiers did not survive to meet their loved ones again. Also the words "don't know where, don't know when" did fit in the picture: the meeting place was uncertain indeed and by many who lost loved ones, it was seen as meeting again in heaven. We'll meet again was often sung as soldiers left for war in England as well as in America. Nowadays, the song is traditionally played on May 5 as a closure to the Liberation Day Concert in Amsterdam, to mark the end of WW II. |
The song was covered several times, by Benny Goodman, by Johnny Cash, Barry Manilow. It was also used in movies such as Dr. Strangelove, The Twilight Zone Tower of Error, Second World War. It also gave its name to the musical film "We'll meet again", with Vera Lynn in the lead roll.

Lyrics:
We'll meet again, don't know where, don't know when
But I know we'll meet again some sunny day
Keep smiling through, just the way you used to do
Till the blue skies chase the dark clouds far away
Now, won't you please say "Hello" to the folks that I know
Tell 'em it won't be long
'Cause they'd be happy to know that when you saw me go
I was singing this song
We'll meet again, don't know where, don't know when
But I'm sure we'll meet again some sunny day
We'll meet again, don't know where, don't know when
But I know we'll meet again some sunny day
Keep smiling through, just the way you used to do
Till the blue skies chase the dark clouds far away
Keep smiling through, just the way you used to do
Till the blue skies chase the dark clouds far away
