Raspberry Chime (Malinoviy Zvon)
The second carillon was bought by Peter I for his residence in Peterhof, the parks and fountains town nearby Saint-Petersburg. The carillon was called "crystal" and was driven with the water power. It served till the beginning of the 19 century and has been reinstated in 2005. The new carillon is smaller than in Saint-Petersburg, its sound sometimes reminds a music box. It is also produced by Petit & Fritsen, as the carillon presented to Saint-Petersburg.

The Belgian city of Mechelen has been the European center of the bells casting since 15-16 centuries. The quality of the bells has become a standard and the basis for the art of bell playing that flourishes there up to now. Mechelen is home to a world-famous carillon school. It attracts students from all over the world looking to perfect the art of carillon playing.
The carillon is a musical instrument, being a finely tuned and properly selected set of bells of different sizes. It allows performing nice melodies with bells. The Russian Tsar Peter I traveled across Europe and somewhere was fascinated with the Mechelen bells. In 1720 he bought the first carillon of 35 bells for the Peter and Paul Cathedral in Saint-Petersburg. The new Russian capital was actively built at that time. The carillon suffered in fire in 1756 and a new one was ordered by the Russian Empress Elizabeth I. It worked till 1856. After that a set of separate Russian bells rang there. The new carillon was presented to the Cathedral to the tercentennial anniversary of Saint-Petersburg. It contained 51 bells and started its service in 2001. There are also Russian bells and some bells from the old carillon working as currants. Jo Haazen, the director of the Mechelen Carillon School, took a great part in the inspiration and organization of the new carillon production and presentation. A small automatic carillon was also presented to the city in 2002. It was mounted on the 27 meters high concrete arch, established on the Krestovskiy Island. A postmark was printed in 2003 in Belgium and Russia, showing Saint Rumbold`s Cathedral in Mechelen and Peter and Paul Cathedral in Saint-Petersburg. The third Russian carillon was established in 1840s-1850s for the new Saint Isaac`s Cathedral in Saint-Petersburg. Russian master Ivan Stukalkin made the bells from Siberian copper five-copeck coins. The carillon was broken in 1929 by Soviet powers and reestablished in 2012. The new bells were cast in Voronezh.

The Russian phrase "Malinoviy Zvon" is well known, but just a few people know where it stems from. The nice bell ringing used to be called the "red chime" or "красный звон" in Russia. It is a special manner of the Church festive ringing. The French word for the Belgian "Mechelen" is "Malines", similar to the Russian word for raspberry ("малина", "malina" in Latin transcription). Russian aristocratic elite generally didn`t know Flemish or Dutch, but knew French very well. On the other hand, "raspberry" or "малиновый" was used in the ordinary people`s talking to mark very pleasant and refined things, as the "red chime" of bells. That is why the raspberry chime or "малиновый звон" ("malinoviy zvon" in Latin trascription) has become a widely accepted phrase to mark a melodic fine bells ringing, produced by Mechelen carillons and by other bell systems made to some extent according to its example. That way, the high quality of the Mechelen bells and the ability to build a melody due to a fine set of bells and a special mechanics, together with the Russian love to the group of red colours regarded as festive, have made the raspberry chime a label for all nice bell sounding in Russia. "Malinoviy zvon" has become an essential characteristic of the Russian culture.
A very famous Russian song "Malinoviy Zvon" was composed by Alexander Morozov in 1987 to the words by Anatoly Poperechniy. The poet came to A. Morozov and showed him his new verse. The composer "felt a wave going from the text" and asked for an old guitar. After half an hour sitting in his kitchen with the guitar, he was ready with the new song. The song has become very well known and popular. The singer from the Soviet Ukraine Nikolay Gnatyuk has performed it at the stage and recorded some video clips. The main idea of the song is that the singing man loves his motherland. The song participated in the "Song Of The Year" concert of 1987. It stays very popular among Russian speaking people in our days also.

Russian text

English translation
The Raspberry Chime (Music by A. Morozov, words by A. Poperechniy) I dream and from time to time I heed a raspberry chime... That marks the eve of the dawn, The grassy bells ring along; The rowans flash by chains, Bright red in the Russian plains; Something I natively part, In the backwoods touches my heart... The raspberry chime at the dawn... My land I have never forgone, Since childhood I`ve been loving her, Like full of the chime my heart were. This ringing stems also from The mother`s home lights on, From that star high in the sky, From a distress that passed by. A dusty road gets warm, We walked it through the ripe corn, There we felt, like in dreams, The dawn`s raspberry beams. The raspberry chime at the dawn... My land I have never forgone, Since childhood I`ve been loving her, Like full of the chime my heart were. Translation: Alexander |
