Ne dlya menya pridet vesna
(The spring will come for me no more)
This popular Russian song was composed by N. Dewitte (1811-1844) to the verse written by A. Molchanov. About the poet we only know that he served as a marine officer on "Silistra", the flagship of the Black Sea Fleet, in the years of the First Caucasian War (1817-1864). Soon after the poem had been written, it became very popular among the soldiers and officers who participated in the war, so that they copied the verse in their diaries and notebooks.
The poem was published for the first time in the magazine "Библиотека для чтения" ("The Reading Library") № 33, in 1938-1939, and it was titled "On the ship "Silistra", 1838 Molchanov". This was also the time, when the well known musician, V. Molchanov, head of the military choirs, wrote songs. As he took also part in military campaigns, just like the poet of the verse, it could be a possibility that he and the author of that popular verse, were the same person. |
At the beginning of the year of 1840, Nikolai Dewitte heard the verse and wrote the music to it. For a long time it was even commonly believed that Dewitte was the author of both the music and the lyrics. As soon as it had been published, the song became very popular and started to live its own life: the melody touched the soul, fascinated and at the same time, it was simple and memorable. It proved to be a real "officers romance". Even nowadays the melody has remained unchanged, though the words have been adapted several times, according to the historical and social circumstances of the performers.
At the end of the 19th, beginning of the 20th century, the romance was published again, with the new signature "words and music by A. Gadalin". At the same time the romance became part of the famous Russian singer Fyodor Shalyapin's repertoire, and a new wave of popularity followed for the song.

Especially for those performances, Dewitte's music was adapted by the pianist Jakob Prigogine (1840-1920), the Gypsy choir accompanist of the Moscow restaurant "Yar", who created a number of arrangements of the popular romances and ballads for the Russian and Gypsy choruses.

In the meantime, little was remembered about the original authors of the romance, the song underwent folklorization and became a popular folk song. The romance also seemed to fit for all occasions. With the river name "Bug" from the original poem, being changed to the river name "Don", it became widely known as the Cossack Romance. The song has become one of the most popular "White Guard" romances and with an adapted text, also a popular war romance for the Russian Red Army. The song was popular among amateur performers during the Great Patriotic War, while the soldiers sang the text as "And for me the spring will come". Even the prisoners invented their own lyrics to the romance and made it a song of their own.
According to the Russian writer Konstantin Paustovkiy's memories, the romance was being performed during the funeral ceremony of Sasha the Musician, who had become a hero of A. Kuprin's story "The Gambrinus". It must be noted that Paustovskiy wrongly called him "Aron Goldstein" in his book "Time of great Expectations". The real name of Sasha was Alexander Y. Pevzner, he lived in Odessa and died in 1920.
In 1930 the Soviet Latvian composer Oscar Strok used a quote of the romance in one of his arrangements of the tango "When spring comes again." The romance has been performed by both the classic famous Russian singers: Fyodor Shalyapin, Anastasia Vyaltseva, and the modern performers and groups, such as Pelagea, Don Cossacks Choir, Moscow Sretensky Monastery Choir, Eugene Dyatlov and many others. Sometimes the lyrics are adapted according to the performers discretion, but with the basics still referring to the original text. The song "Not for me spring will come" was also used in Russian movies and TV-series: 1978: "Five Evenings". The release of the movie contrubuted to the popularity of the romance. 2005: TV-series "The Ataman", 2011: "The House", 2014: "Kiss! 2", 2016: TV-series "Guess Artists". SCORE FOR ACCORDION |

Russian text

English text
The spring will come for me no more, And Don will overflow sans me, The girl`s heart will get strong pulsating, But her delight I`ll feel no more. The gardens bloom for me no more, The grove gets blooming in the valley, The nightingale meets spring so pally, And he will sing for me no more. The brooks will purl for me no more, With their diamond streams so merry, The black eyebrows, eyes dark-cherry, The girl grows up for me no more. The Easter will not come for me, All my kin will sit at the table And "Christ is risen!" they will say all, That kind of life is not for me. And wine will pour among the babble, That kind of life is not for me. The flowers bloom not for me, The rose reveals its fragrant blossom, When picked, it soon becomes the lost one, That kind of life is not for me. A piece of lead is doomed for me, Into my white flesh it will go, The bitter tears will long flow, This life, my brother, waits for me. Translation by Alexander |
