V Lunnom Siyan`e
In the Moon Shine; В лунном сиянье
The music and the lyrics for this beautiful Russian romance were written by the Russian poet and composer Eugenie Dmitrievich Yuriev (1882-1911).
The romance, which is also known by the name "Bell", or "Ding-ding-ding", belongs to the so-called yamshchick songs (coachmen songs), a tradition that started with the song "Look, the fast troika races" , composed by Alexei Verstovskiy to a poem by Fyodor Glinka in the early years of the XIX century. The popularity of the song "In the Moon Shining" was largely due to the performances of Anastasia Vyaltseva (1871-1913). The songstress, who originated from the peasants, became incredibly popular at the beginning of the 20th century. Her name spoke a lot to the Russian heart: people called her "The Russian Cinderella", referring to her descent, or "The seagull of the Russian variety". When being on stage she was asked even up to twenty times to perform an encore, which she always did with pleasure. She toured all over Russia in a special railway carriage, but she always refused to go on a tour abroad: in principle she only spoke to the Russian people. |
Vialtseva's romance "In the Moon Shine" was very popular at that time. Though the songstress Nadezjda Plevitskaya (1884-1940) was more appreciated at the Tsar's court, "In the Moon Shine" sung by Anastasia Vialtseva was well known and loved by Tsar Nicholas II. The popularity of the romance was even that great, that because of this it became an involutary witness of a dark page in Russian history, connected with the murder of Grigory Rasputin.
The first gramophone records appeared with the romances sung by Anastasia Vialtseva, which were preserved in the A. Bakhrushin Theater Museum. In December 1916 Grigory Efimovich Rasputin, a close friend of the Tsar`s family, who also cured on regular base the only son of the Empress from hemophilia, was cowardly killed in the Prince Yusupov's palace. The participants of this fateful event later recalled that in order to mask the sounds of shooting, shouting, or a struggle, the volume of the gramophone was switched on to its highest level, while it was playing the "In The Moon Shining" romance by Vialtseva. Also in the French film "Raspoutine" (2011), the sound of this romance is used several times.
Soon after the October Revolution (1917) though, the new government declared the whole romance genre to be a "bourgeois remnant", which hindered the building of the bright future. It was only from the second half of the twentieth century that the romance was rehabilitated and began to return to the Soviet listeners. |

A famous Russian singer Eduard Khil took part in the musical arrangement and performance of a song, devoted to the Russian Orthodox Church saint, the Saint Blessed Ksenia of St. Petersburg. The new words were written to the motive of the romance "In The Moon Shining" and Khil performed the new song to the public on the Saint Ksenia`s Day. The new composition was met by the audience with a delighted applause.
As the text is old-styled, the romance is now not a drinking song, regardless the motive is commonly known. However, in the movies and theater pieces, the romance is widely used as illustrating the Russian culture of the XX century beginning. The reason is the very memorable melody and the text that expresses the common people feelings, easily understandable to everyone.
The romance is popular among the professional performers as a brilliant piece, loved by the public.

English translation
In the moon shining, The snow silvers. A troika`s racing, Ringing its sleigh bells. "Ding-ding-ding, ding-ding-ding!" This word each small bell says And this sound, this ring, Reminds me of old days. In the moon shining, To my mind it came: When I met you, friend, The spring was the same... Like a bell, your young voice Very cheerfully rang "Ding-ding-ding, ding-ding-ding!" Of love it sweetly sang... A noisy chock-full Hall came into sight, Your dear face with The bridal veil white... "Ding-ding-ding, ding-ding-ding!" This word each full glass says With the young pretty wife My antagonist stays! Translation by Accordeonworld |
