Glyazhu V Ozera Sinie
I Look Into The Blue Lakes, Гляжу в озёра синие
This Russian song was composed in 1971 by the famous composer and USSR State Laureate (1952) Leonid Afanasyev (1921-1995). The lyrics were written by the poet Igor Shaferan (1932-1994).
After many months of work in one of the largest film studios of Europe, Mosfilm, which is also the leading enterprise in the film industries of Russia, the film "Shadows Fade At Noon", "Тени исчезают в полдень", was completed. This is a seven-part television film, based on the novel by A. Ivanov and shot under the direction of V. Krasnopolsky and V. Uskov. The story takes place after the ending of the tsarist government, and tells how the descendants of a noble family, Constantine and Seraphime, settle in the remote taiga village Zeleny Dol, using other people's names. The fate of several generations of inhabitants of the village is being followed, and against the background of the crucial events that did tear the country apart, the personal drama of the former aristocrats plays, who are forced to pretend loyal in anticipation of the old regime come back. |
While the Soviet power only strengthens its position, Constantine and Seraphim are confronted with the fact that the lifeblood and the political positions of their children do differ radically from their own older views.
For the composer the task to write the music for this serial of films was a very difficult one. He had to take into account the complexity of the plot, knowing that he had to find a single musical key to everything that later would be put in action. For whatever reason, Afanasyev did not succeed in finding the key to the requested song. |

One day, while walking Tverskaya Street, all of a sudden he heard the melody loud and clear sounding in his head. He wrote the notes down, but the melody could not impress the film director Krasnopolsky. Afanasyev did not argue, but one month later he presented the melody to the film director again. This time Krasnopolsky was impressed with the tune, which was accepted for the film, without Afanasyev having changed one single note.
At this point the poet Igor Shaferan was invited to write the lyrics, and with the performance of the songstress Ekaterina Shavrina, the song "I Look Into The Blue Lakes" was born. When the movie was being shown on television, during seven evenings the story about the events of the past days was told, preceded by a heart-melting tune, that sounded in the solo of strings, then in the orchestra, and only in the fifth series, this melody turned into a song that sounded behind the scenes. |

Russian lyrics:
English translation
I look into the blue lakes, while the chamomiles smell fine ... I call you Russia my land, the only land of mine. If asked or re-asked, I'll say no other I love more Than Russia that gave my name, the country I adore. I look into the blue lakes, while the chamomiles smell fine ... I call you Russia my land, the only land of mine. I feel the biggest happiness in living by one fate, To grieve with you, my native land, with you to celebrate! Nor years, nor all troubles made your beauty being oppressed. With Ivans and Marias you've been proud and felt blessed. Not all your falcons have returned, some living and some killed ... But their utmost glory into you has been instilled. Nor years, nor all troubles made your beauty being oppressed. With Ivans and Marias you've been proud and felt blessed. I feel the biggest happiness in living by one fate, To grieve with you, my native land, with you to celebrate! Translation by Akkordeonword |

Glyazhu v ozera siniye, v polyakh romashki rvu…
Zovu tebya Rossiyeyu, yedinstvennoy zovu.
Sprosi-peresprosi menya — mileye net zemli.
Menya zdes' russkim imenem kogda-to narekli.
Glyazhu v ozera siniye, v polyakh romashki rvu…
Zovu tebya Rossiyeyu, yedinstvennoy zovu.
Ne znayu schast'ya bol'shego, chem zhit' odnoy sud'boy,
Grustit' s toboy, zemlya moya, i prazdnovat' s toboy!
Krasu tvoyu ne starili ni gody, ni beda.
Ivanami da Mar'yami gordilas' ty vsegda.
Ne vse vernulis' sokoly — kto zhiv, a kto ubit…
No slava ikh vysokaya tebe prinadlezhit.
Krasu tvoyu ne starili ni gody, ni beda.
