Warszawianka
There are two Polish songs by the same title: "Warszawianka (1905)" and "Warszawianka (1831) roku" (also called "The song of Warsaw 1831", or "The Lady of Warsaw").
This last song, Warszawianka 1831 roku, was written by Casimir François Delavigne, the music was composed by the Polish composer Karol Kurpinski (1785 - 1857). The lyrics to the melody were written in support of the November Uprising, which took place in the years 1830 - 1831. The French poet Delavigne was fascinated by the news of the Uprising making its way to Paris and wrote the words, that were translated to Polish by the historian, journalist and poet Karol Sienkiewicz. This song sometimes is confused with the later song with the same name "Warszawianka". |
To distinguish between the two songs, the latest one often is called "Warszawianka 1905 roku", after it became the hymn of demonstrating workers during the Revolution in the kingdom of Poland (1905 - 1907), when 30 workers were shot during the May Day demonstrations in Warsaw in 1905.
There are two versions on when Waclaw Swiecicky wrote the lyrics to the melody: one says that he wrote it in 1879, while serving a sentence in the Tenth Pavilion of the Warsaw Citadel for socialist activity. According to the other version, he wrote it in 1883 immediately after his return from exile in Siberia. Anyhow, by the beginning of the next decade the song became one of the most popular revolutionary anthems in Russian-held Poland. It remains unknown who wrote the music.
The Russian version with altered lyrics, the "Varshavianka", became popularized during the Russian Revolution at the beginning of the twentieth century The song is characterized with an intense rhythm and calls "To bloody battle, holy and righteous". One line from the song served as the title for the Soviet film "Hostile Whirlwinds" (Вихри враждебные, transliteration Vikhri vrazhdebnye) that was shot in 1953. Gleb Krhizhanovsky is said to be the author of the Russian lyrics in 1897, while being imprisoned. |
The Spanish song "To the barricades" was also set to the tune of "Warszawianka 1905 roku". A German translation was used as a common piece of marching music by the army. The French 1st Parachute Hussar Regiment used the same melody with adapted lyrics and an English version was created by Paul Robeson, but was not very successful though. In the opening scene of the movie "The Jackal" (1997), Warszawianka is played with footage of the October Revolution.
Original Polish lyrics
Śmiało podnieśmy sztandar nasz w górę, Choć burza wrogich żywiołów wyje, Choć nas dziś gnębią siły ponure, Chociaż niepewne jutro niczyje. O, bo to sztandar całej ludzkości, To hasło święte, pieśń zmartwychwstania, To tryumf pracy, sprawiedliwości, To zorza wszystkich ludów zbratania! Naprzód, Warszawo! Na walkę krwawą, Świętą a prawą! Marsz, marsz, Warszawo! Marsz, marsz, Warszawo! Hurra! Zerwijmy z carów korony, Gdy ludy dotąd chodzą w cierniowej, I w krwi zatopmy nadgniłe trony, Spurpurowiałe we krwi ludowej! Ha! Zemsta straszna dzisiejszym katom, Co wysysają życie z milionów. Ha! Zemsta carom i plutokratom, A przyjdzie żniwo przyszłości plonów! |
Russian version
German version
