Vykhozhu Odin Ya Na Dorogu
I Come Out Lonely To The Road
The romance obtained a status of the Russian folk song. The famous Russian poet of the Scottish origin, Mikhail Lermontov, composed the verse in 1841, in the period since May till July, on the road to the Caucasus, where he took part in the war, pursued by the Russian Empire. He wrote the verse on the 22-23 pages of a notebook, a gift of V. Odoevskiy, a Russian writer. Odoevskiy wrote in the notebook, that he waited to receive it back with no place empty. 27.07.1841 the poet was killed in a duel. The verse became the last creation of the great poet, and one of the most significant. It was firstly published in 1843 in the "Отечественные записки" ("The Domestic Notes") journal.
The source for the Lermontov`s inspiration was the H. Heine`s verse "Der Tod, das ist die kuehle Nacht" ("Death, that is the cool night") from the "Buch der Lieder" ("Book of Songs"). The images and the soul of the two verses are very similar. However, Lermontov elaborates the theme wider and deeper and includes his personal motives in it. Some verses of A. Pushkin played also a role as the background. The researches of the Lermontov creativity remark, that the verse is very closely connected with some important previous works of the poet, includes and develops his earlier ideas and images. A deep philosophic sense is also inherent in the text. So, the road means the human life. Lermontov also succeeded in guessing how the Earth looks like while being seen from the space: in the blue shine. |
Russian writers and literature activists, Leo Tolstoy and Vissarion Belinskiy, gave their very high appraisal to the Lermontov`s text. The verse is studied in the Russian schools for a long time. It is cited in the Russian literature, for example in "The Shore" by Y. Bondarev.
The romance is known by many Russian-speaking people by heart and sung on the suitable occasions. Russian

Pustynya vnemlet bogu, I zvezda s zvezdoyu govorit. V nebesah torzhestvenno i chudno! Spit zemlya v siyan'i golubom... Chto zhe mne tak bol'no i tak trudno? Zhdu l' chego? zhaleyu li o chyom? Uzh ne zhdu ot zhizni nichego ya, I ne zhal' mne proshlogo nichut'; Ya ishchu svobody i pokoya! Ya b hotel zabyt'sya i zasnut'! No ne tem holodnym snom mogily... Ya b zhelal naveki tak zasnut', Chtob v grudi dremali zhizni sily, Chtob dysha vzdymalas' tiho grud'; Chtob vsyu noch', ves' den' moj sluh leleya, Pro lyubov' mne sladkij golos pel, Nado mnoj chtob vechno zeleneya Tyomnyj dub sklonyalsya i shumel. |
English
I come out lonely to the road; The siliceous path sheens through the mist; The night`s still. The wilderness perceives God; And the stars talk over the life`s gist. The skies are quite wonderful and solemn! The Earth gently sleeps in the blue shine... Why do I feel very hard and sorely? Why do I regret and bide my time? I`m to wait for nothing from the life`s feast, And I spare my past not a bit; I look for the freedom and the calm peace! I would like to drowse and to sleep! But to sleep not as inside a cold grave... I would like to sleep forever so That the vital force my chest preserves safe, That my chest breathes well and surges soft; That day and night long I gladly hear A sweet voice that sings for me of love, That an oak greens forever near, Tilts over me and rustles from above.
