Romashki Spryatalis'
Chamomiles Did Hide, Ромашки спрятались
The official name of the song was initially "Зачем вы, девочки, красивых любите?", ("Why do girls fall in love with handsome men in deep?"). The lyrics were written by the poet-songwriter Igor Shaferan (1932-1994), while the melody was composed in the years 1970 by Evgeniy Ptichkin (1930-1993). The music, however, seemed not to be original, but derived from the song "Taganka", which dated from before the February Revolution of 1917, but remained popular in the first half of the 20th century. According to some sources, "Taganka" was invented by thieves-recidivists, whose number in the Moscow prison "Taganka", after which the song was called, increased in the last years of the reign of Tsar Nicolas II, as a consequence of World War I. It had been performed for the first time by Fjodor Shalyapin, after his visit to the prisoners in 1906. Later he sang another version of the song, which was popular in the years 1920 - 1925, and became known as a hymn to the prison life of the USSR. The song "Taganka", however, is not a song of criminals, but it rather tells the story of a person who stumbled in life.

It is unknown whether the composer did use this old melody deliberately or involuntarily, but it is widely believed that Ptichkin was perfectly aware of the fact, as it had been his task to write a deep and touching "popular" song. The lyrics of "Taganka" might have inspired him to use the notes of the song, as a base for his new creation.
It was the film director Leonid Mariagin (1937-2003) who had asked the two authors to write a song for the television movie "My Street", which was started at the end of the 1960s, and was based on the play by Isidor Shtok "Ленинградский проспект" ("Leningrad Prospect"). The central story in this film is the fate of the old Zabrodins family, who have always lived an honest life. What happens in the family of their eldest son, and how the youngest son, a famous football player, behaves, is not only completely incomprehensible to the parents, but it makes them suffer hard, and causes their deadly pains.

The script writers had decided to put the song in the mouth of Claudia Zabrodina, performed by the Peoples Artist of the RSFSR, Nina Sazonova. Therefore it was up to the songstress and the film director to make a judgement about the new song that was created. After long composer`s and poetic efforts, Ptichkin and Shaferan presented them their work, but it was rejected by Mariagin. The film director was persuaded that the song would never be sung. The second version was rejected by the songstress Nina Sazonova, as according to her, the song did not touch the soul. And so happened with the third version, the fourth, and also the fifth. It was only the sixth option that finally was approved by both the songstress and Mariagin.

As Nina Sazonova started singing this newly arranged melody, there was an absolute silence in the studio: all people that were participating in the filming of that moment, from the make-up artists to the cleaning people, stopped their activities for listening to this beautiful song. The success of the song was obvious. The deeply lyrical song narrates about a quarrel between two loving people, when the woman feels herself deceived and left alone, because the handsome man frivolously finds another woman. A poet M. Tanich called the song a folk one and the best work of I. Shaferan. The music, as it appeared in the film, immediately became very popular, and it is even much better remembered than the movie itself. Nowadays it is a well-known drinking song, being performed mostly be women. The song sounds in other movies, for example, in the very famous "Long Break", well-known for its own music composed by E. Kolmanovsky. In one of the films from the contemporary Russian detective serial "Secrets Of The Investigation" two main female personages, performed by Anna Kovalchuk and Emilia Spivak, sing part of the song together, sitting at a table and discussing with tears their husbands` behaviour.
The song "Camomiles Did Hide" was performed by Nina Sazonova, Vika Tsyganova, Tatiana Bulanova & Alena Apina & Natasha Koroleva, Nadezhda Babkina & Al Bano, Claudia Penkova, Olga Voronets, Lev Leshenko, Alyona Bikkulova.

Russian text:

English text:
The chamomiles did hide, the buttercups did weep, When the hard bitter words hurt my heart strong. Why do girls fall in love with handsome men in deep? Their unfaithful love makes all things wrong. Decisively I took his coat off my back, I found strength to keep a proud mask. And I told him to go, wished him all the best! And for forgiveness me, he did not ask. The chamomiles are dry, the buttercups are picked, The river carries water cold as ice. Why do girls fall in love with handsome men in deep? This love requires lots to sacrifice!
