Efrem Podgaits was born in 1949 in Vinnitsa Ukraine.
He received his musical training at the Moscow Conservatory, where he studied composition. He graduated in 1974. Since 1978 he is a member of the Russian Union of Composers. From 1982 till 1990 he was director of the artistic association "Composers and Children". Music performed by children has a special meaning for Podgaits and working together with him brings the children to "a new dimension in their artistic life, to a world of imagery and feelings linked to the most uplifting dream-like state, poetic fantasy, the love of nature and of the world around them." Podgaits has written operas, symphonies and concerti for different instruments. His style shows a philosophical approach of life and a knowledge of different musical languages, which results in strikingly personal music. |
Podgaits's complex rhythms and modernistic writing remain highly accessible, they reveal a rich inner world, steeped in poetry and love for humanity. His works have been performed in Moscow, Kiev, Berlin and in many places of Russia. Many of his works are compulsory pieces in the programs of major international competitions.
