Nadezhda;
Hope; Надежда
The music for the song "Nadezhda" was written in 1971 by the composer Alexandra Pakhmutova (1929-), the lyrics by the poet Nikolai Dobronravov (1928-).
Originally the song was written for a man's voice, following the habits of the composer. The Moscow Art Theater actor Yuri Puzyrev was the very first performer of the song "Nadezhda", but the results of his performance could not please the authors. They decided that "Nadezhda" should be sung by the famous Soviet (later - Russian) baritone singer Iosif Kobzon (1937-), who was permanently on TV at that time. However, after having seen the clavier, Kobzon did not see a hit in the song and he refused the offer. At that point the sound recording company "Melody" decided to hand the song to the songstress Edyta Piecha, who officially became the first performer. |
Almost at the same time, in 1973, the editor of "Melody", Anna Kachalina, invited the composer Pakhmutova and the poet Dobronrarov to send several new Russian songs to Warsaw, to Anna German, who was still recovering from the terrible car accident that she suffered from in Italy. When seeing the song "Nadezhda", "Hope", Anna understood: this was the song she wanted to sing at any cost! It was very symbolic that the song became her first new and recorded one after the recovery.
One year later, in 1974, Anna German arrived in Moscow and recorded the song with "Melody". Both the authors of "Nadezhda" were delighted when listening to the new recording. They were persuaded that this was the sound the song needed. After this recording Anna (and several other Polish singers) came on tour to the Soviet Union. Everywhere in the country she had big fans and she was received with great cheers. The people met her with banners: "We love you Anna". The kilometer queues stood at the ticket offices, and "Hope" sounded on the streets, from all radio receivers.

At the concerts Anna German was always asked to perform "Hope", and to the great joy of her audience, she always sang it at the end of her programme. Her performance became the most famous and the only classical version of "Nadezhda".
In 1975 "Nadezhda" became the laureate of the festival "The Song Of The Year" ("Песня года"). That time only it was performed by the Soviet pop and opera singer Muslim Magomaev (1942-2008), as Anna German and Edyta Piecha could not participate. On this occasion Magomaev was also asked to perform the song several times, and later on he kept "Nadezhda" in his repertoire, as well as Iosif Kobzon, who understood his previous mistake.

Anna German subsequently made several recordings with the song "Hope" on the Soviet television, but by a personal order of the chairman of the State Committee for Television and Radio, Lapin, these records were later demagnetized.
The title and the fame of the song soon made it the subject of legends and traditions: For the Soviet and Russian cosmonauts it has become a tradition to listen to "Nadezhda" performed by Anna German before every flight. A legend goes that one of the Russian pilots who served in Afghanistan was miraculously saved from a burning helicopter, shot down by the enemy. His chance to survive was only one in a million, but he did, and for the rest of his life the soldier believed that his recovery came thanks to the song "Hope", that Edyta Piecha sang to him at the hospital. |
In Chile, two boys, who had been to the USSR and had rest in the famous summer camp "Artek", were arrested and imprisoned after the coup made by general A. Pinochet. They recorded the song "Nadezhda" and managed to send it to the USSR. The Soviet press organized an action of support, when children sent postcards appealing for the freedom for those two boys. And the boys were set free!

Russian lyrics

English translation
An unknown star shines in the sky, We are separated from the home, And between us the big cities lie, The runway lights of the aerodromes. Here we are having fogs and rains, Here we are having chilly daybreaks, Here, on the unexplored pathways, We face the entangled plots that life makes. The hope is my guiding star, And my boldness brings a good fortune, Just one song suffices by far, If it sings that home I`ll come soon. Just believe that here, from afar, Many things escape even a keen glance, Thunderstormy clouds melt apart, The resentments seem to be the wrong ones. One must only learn the science to wait, One must be well-balanced and persistent, That lets one sometimes get from one`s fate The glad news, by telegram in brief sent. The hope is my guiding star, And my boldness brings a good fortune, Just one song suffices by far, If it sings that home I`ll come soon. And we shall, as usual, not forget Everything we sang and did not finish The eyes: lovely, tired, slightly wet, Moscow`s blue snowstorms, a wind`s swish. And between us the big cities lie, The lifeways we separately grope, An unknown star is in the sky, Shining like a tribute to the hope. The hope is my guiding star, And my boldness brings a good fortune, Just one song suffices by far, If it sings that home I`ll come soon. Translation by Accordeonworld.weebly.com |
