Million Alykh Roz;
A Million Roses; Миллион алых роз
The music for this song, that became one of the most popular Soviet songs of the 1980s, was composed by the Soviet Latvian composer Raymond Pauls (1936- ). The melody itself appeared already in the 1970s, with the words of the poet Leon Briedis. At that time the song was called "Dāvāja Māriņa" (A Gift To Marina), and was about a mother, Marina, who gave life to her daughter, but forgot about the most important thing: happiness. "A Gift To Marina", initially given to the well-known Soviet Latvian songstress Larisa Mondrus, became very famous with the performance by the Latvian songstress Aie Kukule (1956- ), who won the annual Latvian contest "Microphone" with it in 1981.
When the Soviet Russian poet Andrei Voznesensky (1933-2010) heard this heartfelt melody, the tune reminded him of an excerpt from Constantine Paustovsky's novel "The Stories Of Life", which was the fifth book of the series "The Throw To The South". |
In that book the story was told about the love of the Georgian primitivist painter Niko Pirosmani (1862-1918) to the French singer and dancer Margarita de Sevres. During his life the painter often had been living in poverty, sometimes painting in exchange for food. After his death though, he became really famous, most probably also due to the song "A Million Roses".
Niko Pirosmani lived in Tiflis when in March 1909 the beautiful French singer Margarita de Sevres had performances there. The painter was amazed with her beauty and talent, and immediately fell in love with her. Margarita, however, had no eye for the desperate painter, even if he fell crying to the ground for kissing the stones she had touched with her feet. After her, she was an artist, belonging to the public, which made it, in her point of view, impossible to belong to one single person. It was the period when Pirosmani painted his most famous work "Actress Margarita". |

As none of his attempts to win Margarita's hand had succeeded, on his birthday he sold all his possessions and bought all the flowers that were available, not only in the city, but in the entire environment. The huge carts filled with roses, acacias, lilies, lilacs and many other flowers were driven to the hotel where Margarita stayed. The flowers were unloaded and set down at the windows, the doorsteps, and from the hotel on they filled the street till the complete environment turned into one big carpet of flowers. The sight was so amazing, so beautiful, that not one single person dared to step on this beautiful flowerbed. The songstress, awakened by the noise, also felt deeply impressed by this colorful carpet. When seeing Niko Pirosmani approaching her house while walking through the flowers, she ran towards the poet in her most beautiful dress, embraced him, and kissed him on the lips, for the first and also the last time. A little later she left Georgia with a rich admirer.

The poem written by Andrei Voznesensky to the tune of "Dāvāja Māriņa" was based on that love story, which he had read in Paustovsky's novel. The famous songstress Alla Pugacheva, who was offered to sing that newly created song, initially reacted negatively, as she disliked the text, which she regarded as not suitable for her. She wanted to perform the songs that had been created specifically for her, and insisted on making her own corrections to the lyrics. The poet though refused to change one single word, and eventually it was the original text that she finally recorded the song with. She disliked the song very much though, that she switched the radio off each time A Million Roses was being broadcasted. However, as it had happened before, this song became so famous that Pugacheva had to bring it with each performance. As a matter of fact, A Million Roses became one of her her visiting cards. In 1983 Pugacheva became a laureate of the annual TV festival "The Song Of The Year" with the very song.
At the end of 1982 the recording of the New Year program "Attraction" took place in the Circus on Tsvetsnoy Boulevard. Alla Pugacheva performed there, not only as a songstress, but also as a co-host, together with the illusionist Igor Kio. On the occasion the songstress also presented her new song "A Million Roses", that had been recorded only one day before. According to the script, she had to perform the song sitting on a swing, for which a trapeze of the circus was used on that occasion. Singing "A Million Roses", Pugacheva took a seat on the trapeze, which, after the first chorus, suddenly rose several meters. With each chorus the trapeze rose higher and higher. Igor Kio was confused, as he knew the songstress had not been fastened, but Alla Pugacheva remained perfectly calm, even when being raised to the twenty meter height.

The program was broadcasted on January 2nd of 1983, and immediately after this performance the song became super popular. At the end of 1983 it circulated with over 6 million copies, which made it one of the best songs of Pugacheva's releases. "A Million Roses" became that famous that it also inspired musicians in other countries, especially the Japanese ones. As in Japan a compilation album was being prepared of Alla Pugacheva's hits and "A Million Roses" was chosen as the single that would precede the release of the album. The song was several times broadcasted on the Japanese radio and immediately it became very popular. After a young lady, Nina Hjodo, translated the lyrics into Japanese, her translation got widely known, and soon the Japanese sang "A Million Roses" as if it were their own. In the Japanese city of Fukuyama the song is regarded to be the motive of this city of roses. The incoming trains are met with the motive.
The Japanese are not the only though, to think that "A Million Roses" originally is their native song. In 1984 it was claimed that the Iranian singer Googoosh sang this song already in 1969. This claim could not be proven though.
Performed by: Alla Pugacheva, Ani Lorak, Dominique Moisan (France), Googoosh (Iran), Infinity Of Sound (South Korean female trio), Farangis (Tadzhikistan), Dina Garipova & Elmira Kalimullina, Mikhail Shufutinsky, Misora Hibari (Japan), Band Odessa (Ukraine), Samara Karimova (Kyrgyzstan), Philip Kirkorov, Rami Sol (Israel), M. Turezky Choir, Elena Vaenga, Leningrad (S. Shnur), and many others (totally about 100 cavers in different languages).

English text
One painter lived having just a house and several scenes But he loved an actress being swayed by the flowers` jinns. The painter sold then his scenes, he sold the house he had, And with that money he bought lots of the flowers red. Refrain 2 times Million-strong, million-strong, million-strong, and all red From above, from above, you see the roses Who's in love, who's in love to the loss of the head That one turns his life into your flowers Waked, at the window you stand, feeling you might have gone mad: Like in the course of the sleep, the square blooms fully red. The soul will grow cold: what rich man here plays pranks? With bated breath, underneath, the poor painter just stands. Refrain 2 times She was to take a night train, the rendezvous was not long, But in her life, there was an insane roses` song. The painter has lived alone, through a great deal he`s been But in his life, there was the greatest flowered scene. Refrain 2 times Million-strong, million-strong, million-strong, and all red From above, from above, you see the roses Who's in love, who's in love to the loss of the head That one turns his life into your flowers Refrain 3 times Translation by Accordeonworld |
