Kalitka
The Wicket, Калитка
Just a little is known about the music composer, Vsevolod Bujukli. His life years are 1873 -1920. He used to be a Russian piano performer. His mother was a music teacher. He graduated from the Moscow Conservatoire in 1895 by P. Pabst's class. He succeeded in the concert activity in Moscow and around, played nervously, dashingly.
He was one of the best Scriabin`s music performers. Brightly and originally talented musician, he read the verse "Kalitka" and composed music to it, making it on of the most known Russian romances. Alexei Budishchev used to be a very well-known and talented Russian writer and poet (1864 - 1916). His works were widely published and another famous Russian writers appreciated him very much. Alexander Kuprin, Maxim Gorky, Alexander Green devoted their warm words to Budishchev. Nevertheless, the writer is almost forgotten nowadays. The first publication of the romance appeared in 1898, however, the authorship of Budishchev was doubted afterwards. The reason for that was a new publication made by the young composer Matvei Blanter, who wrote down the song from the words of the composer Alexander Obukhov in early 1920s. Obukhov organized small home concerts, where a guitarist Kruchinin took part. Kruchinin remembered the romance, sung by Obukhov, and played it everywhere. As a result, the score publisher A. Pereselentsev and Blanter came to Obukhov asking for the song. They did not know the authorship of the music and text, and wrote Obukhov for the both. The composer and musicologist Yury Birukov has found out the true authors of the romance. |
The second known publishing was in the journal "Огонёк" (The Twinkle) №44 in 1916.

The known earliest recording was made by Vadim Kozin in 1940. The romance is meant to be sung by a man. But the unsurpassed performance belongs to the famous female singer Nadezhda Obúkhova (1886-1961).
The romance sounds in several movies: Malakhov Kurgan (1944, USSR), His Butler's Sister (1943, US). In the second one it is performed by the Canadian actress Deanna Durbin in Russian. (See here from 1:18). The Russian performers of the romance are also Tatiana Azarova, Alexander Malinin, Alexander Gradsky, Sergei Zakharov, Nani Bregvadze, Valeria, and many others. The romance is a very lyrical one, saying how a man is dreaming of his lass coming into the garden, where he waits her by the wicket. The song is a little complex for the ordinary people performance, however, it is much popular among Russian people in professional and advanced amateur performance. |

The Wicket
When just the evening begins its blue shining, When just the stars start to light up the skies, And the silver frost of the bird-cherries Will be graced with the pearls of the dew. Open my wicket quietly and swiftly, And come to the dark garth as a shade. Don`t forget a dark cape, dress it fitly, Put the lace on your head to be veiled. Where branches are bound most densely, By the wicket I will wait for you, On the very threshold of the arbor I will take off the veils of your mouth Open my wicket quietly and swiftly, And come to the dark garth as a shade. Don`t forget a dark cape, dress it fitly, Put the lace on your head to be veiled. Translated by Alexander |
